Biography

Simon Read is a Leeds based double and electric bass player. He has been interested in playing music since early childhood. Encouraged by his musical family, he started out at the age of seven on the violin and at the age twelve was bought an electric bass by his father and has been playing ever since. He got lessons from Tom Mason, the London based bassist and gradually through this time started playing the double bass as well.

Simon also has an ability to play classical music and was accepted onto the Hampshire Specialist Music Course at Peter Symonds Sixth Form College and played in lots of ensembles ranging from quartets to symphony orchestras. He was also the bassist for Hampshire Youth Jazz Orchestra and Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra and played alongside such jazz luminaries as Soweto Kinch, Hiromi and Portico Quartet.

Having studied at Leeds College of Music, Simon has been taught by Garry Jackson, Zoltan Dekany and Dave Kane respectively. After graduating from Leeds Simon formed his own group the Simon Read Octet which benefited from being part of Jazz North’s Northern Line scheme and as a result got to play at the top venues in the north of England.

In September 2015 Simon moved to London and quickly integrated himself into the London scene.
